I often get questions about the technical part of the blog like how I’ve built it, what camera equipment I use and how I make money of the blog, so I’ve decided to share all my secret with you, all in one post. I’ll go through EVERYTHING – it will be a smorgasbord of all my up until now blogging secrets and I hope it will come in useful to you ♥

success fashion blogger Secrets to successful blogging

Let’s start at the beginning

I don’t blog from a blog platform like blogger or blogspot. I operate on my own from my own domain where my site is built by moi – the result of something you’ve created yourself will always be better, and you don’t have to add any ugly ads someone else is making money of either.

1. The property:

I chose one.com to host my domain because it’s Europe’s biggest hosting company and the prices are far better than any other for what a blog like mine needs. I have done quite a bit of research regarding hosts and I feel confident one.com is the best choice for a blog like this. It’s really easy- choose your domain, choose your disk space – that’s it. One.com has an incredible chat suport feature and they will help you with everything 24/7 – incredibly useful! I have the 60GB package.

2. The house

The house of your domain will a software called wordpress.org (NOT wordpress.com), and this is what allows you to write posts and pages once it’s installed onto the domain. Once wordpress is installed you can also install plugins which can do anything from displaying social media icons in the sidebar to apply a spam filter to the comments. WordPress has an extensive forum where you’ll find answer to anything you’ll need.

Plugins I recommend: Akismet, All in One SEO Pack, Comment Luv, Jetpack by WordPress.com, Pinterest Pin it Button for Images, Shareaholic, Social Media Widget, W3 Total Cache, Wordfence Security.

3. The design

In wordpress you can install a theme, this is how your blog will look like. The theme I use is called Thesis 1.8, and it’s hands down the most brilliant theme a novice can have! It’s super easy and highly customizable which means you can make the blog look exactly how you want without needing to pay lots of money to web developers, and as far as I know it’s the only theme that lets you change literally ANYTHING you want. By doing it all yourself you also get the opportunity to change something exactly when you want to, and not having to depend on anyone else.

I’ll give you an example of the Thesis brilliance. With traditional themes you often have to write a geek code of the header image you want to use, and implement the code itself through a file transfer protocol. Pretty boring stuff. Running The Thesis Theme however, you can upload your header image through the built in header uploader right in the dashboard of wordpress! Thesis also has built-in SEO to make sure your blog/site ranks as high as possible in search engines making sure you get as many people clicking through to your blog as possible, something that would require quite the work to accomplish with a theme that doesn’t offer this. Thesis also have an extensive forum where people are really friendly and helpful!

Now that you have the blog built up we can talk about the content and how to make money off all your hard work which I bet is a lot more than you initially thought? ;)

1. First impression

The first impression of the blog is incredibly important, by the first three seconds your visitor will decide wether to hang around or leave and of course we want to make them want to stay! Obviously the design and look of the header will play a big part, but good quality photos in your posts are probably just as important. The wider the photos the better imo, so I use 900 px.

2. Lights, camera, action!

Now, let’s talk about the equipment. I use a Canon 7D and I have three lenses I like to use. For most pictures I use a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Lens, or Canon EF 50mm – f/1.4 USM Lens which is great for close ups and details. For very teeny tiny details I use a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens. I’m lucky to have a boyfriend to take photos of me a few times a month, the rest of the time I use a tripod with a remote control. For editing I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 (Mac) (for pc: Adobe Photoshop CS6 ). Again, you will find lots of tutorials online and it will take time to learn but it’s worth it :)

Affiliate

Affiliate links are links generated with a personal code which means you’ll get a few percentages of what your readers buy through clicking your links. First step in becoming an affiliate is to promise yourself to never include links because you want to make money! I recommend writing from your heart and when you’ve finished your post you can read through and see if anything of what you’ve written can be linked to. Your readers trust in you is worth far more than anything a link to a false recommendation will give you, even if someone is willing to pay extra for it. Readers are smart, they will see through it and stop visiting your blog and without readers you don’t have a blog. Most online stores have an affiliate program, so there really is no need to link to products you don’t whole heartedly recommend.

Which affiliate networks to sign up to

To become an affiliate you need to sign up to affiliate networks hosting the programs, there you will find your personal code.

  • Affiliate Window is the one I use for beauty products. This network has a great overview graf which let’s you easily see how your links are doing. Its also got a deeplink generator which is quick and easy to use as well.
  • Skimlinks I use for everything else. Skimlinks is really easy to use as it automatically turns every single link on your blog to an affiliate link if the product is found in one of their merchants stores, meaning it does all the work for you!
  • Recently I discovered an affiliate network especially for fashion bloggers with lots of useful features, and so far it’s the most rewarding affiliate network I’ve been part of. I’ve probably doubled my income since I started using it. They only accept bloggers through invites, so if you’re interested pop me an email with a link to your site as well as your first and last name through the contact form in the nav menu and I’ll send an invite ♥

Co-operating with brands

Writing about a brand that you’re not an affiliate of might even get you some money too, if they like your review they might contact you to work closer with you which is not only rewarding but a lot of fun as well as you get a closer relationship with a brand you really like and learn a lot along the way. That’s how I started working with Locks & Bonds.

Ads

An overload of ads is never a good idea, but if you spend a lot of time on your blog it’s only fair you get some income from it. A few ads which blends in nicely with your blogs design is ok. Check up AdSense, the google ad network. You can also become a member of a blog network which means they pay you a certain amount per visitors in return for you to place their ads on your blog but often the ads are huge and they make more money of the ads on your blog than what they pay you.

That’s all there is to it folks, please leave your advice in the comment section so we can all help eachother out! :)

Good luck and have lots of fun with it!! :D

I don’t know what it is but I kind of sort of really like these, is that really bad? hehe.. I know they’re a bit tacky maybe, but I just think they’re so fun! So little and cute. It was a lovely reader who just left a link for them so at least there is one other person who is with me on this, you can check them out here. I think I would take off the plug though and use it as a keyring instead, I would be to embarrassed to pull out my phone in public other wise ♥ ;)

What do you think? Cute or tacky, or both? :)

Hi everyone,

Today I’ve been running around in London’s streets sorting out stuff related to the move to London. Things take time. I can’t open a bank account before I have an utility bill, but it can take several months to get the first bill. It’s a really dumb system. Fortunately I managed to find a way around it :)

Tonight I’m going to a pub quiz which might be fun :) I’m thinking of doing another class of Bikram Yoga tomorrow although I’m still quite achy from Tuesday so I will have an early night.

Hope you’re having a great day!! xx

As I was going through my emails today I came across an invite to a new web shop where I found this beauty. It’s now on the top of my wish list! It’s perfect for whimsical women who tend to leave their bags behind where ever they go (yes, I do that) and for those late nights when the grip of the hand isn’t of the strongest. Found in this cool shop.

What do you think? Hot or not?

Hi sweets!

Now we’ve just had brunch at Cecconi’s, shopped for James in Saville Row and bought a coffee table at Ralph Lauren home. Sorry for not posting the outfit as promised yesterday, the time just ran out! We went to Harrods to look at furniture yesterday and today we’re heading back to order them. Eeeeehk, so excited!! It’s going to be so nice to have some furniture around here! We actually bought a mirror yesterday already as we both just fell instantly in love with it. I have no idea where we can fit it, but it was too beautiful to walk passed. It was one of those very large antique Buckingham style silver mirrors, absolutely beautiful!

As we were only walking around in harrods and not in the snow I decided I wanted to wear my new Valentinos which I’m so in love with, I just love the studded bow! The shoes match perfectly with the black Birkin ♥

Hair: Locks&Bonds clip ins, in a colour 60/24 – Sandy Blonde, a full set + quad clip :) Found here, review here and worn here, here, here, here and here :D LOVE it!!

My nose is a little dry and sore but it feels incredible to be able to breathe again, yay!! Next on my list now is to get a treadmill, I miss running so much! It’s now exactly a month since I ran (except for a couple of random runs) and I miss getting up in the morning and powering off to get that extra energy for the rest of the day. I feel a little lost without it. Anyone know of any good places to order a treadmill in London/UK?

Hi sweetest!

Hope you’ve had an amazing week so far? Thank you for all your get better comments, you are so lovely! I’m going to head out for the first time in a few days now despite the snow that has fell over London. James actually had trouble getting a taxi earlier because of the snow, and we’re only talking 5 cm snow….

face Heading off to Harrods

I mixed in some clip ins in my hair today and I’m really excited about it! Some of you started chatting about your Locks&Bonds clip ins in the comment section and hearing you rave about it made me miss my hair so I decided to wear it as soon as I felt better which I do today :D I styled it in a messy way and paired it with a nude matte lip and black eyeliner.

Hey everyone ♥

Sorry for the late post today, I actually just woke up :O Had it not been for the talented puppy waking me up I would’ve slept even longer. I do feel better today though, so hopefully I’m back up tomorrow.

Yesterday my new friend Ricardo from TheOutnet came on the door with this cute little bag. You can imagine what a highlight of the day that was when staying in sick! Online shopping sure is some kind of medicine for me :)

You guessed it – it was of course the Bottega Veneta shoes I ranted the whole flat for to find the card to buy. This is my second pair of Bottega Veneta shoes and I’m thrilled for the other pair to have a new family member, now the other pair needs to run over here from Monaco so they can have fun in the shelves together :D I also need the yellow Victoria Beckham clutch.. sigh, it’s really hard (wardrobe wise) to live in two places…

Hope you’re having a really lovely day, now I’m off walking the puppy covered in 23 layers of warm jumpers! xx

Hello wonderful people ♥

I have thing for yellow at the moment. I’m craving all things yellow! Mango, yellow bags, bananas, yellow shoes (hint for yesterdays question).

mango1 Saint Laurent

I noticed almost every designer in Harrods had yellow in their upcoming collections for spring, and both MyTheresa and Net-a-porter has launched many lovely new yellow items. My favourite yellow bag I’ve seen so far is the newly redesigned YSL Cabas Chyc for Saint Laurent have you seen it??

yellow1 Saint Laurent

It comes in two sizes, small and medium, and the difference to the old design is that it’s made a little more minimalistic. I thought the Cabas Chyc was a great bag already, but this is a fabulous bag and I want it so very much!! MyTheresa got this yellow version and the pink version and both are already sold out….

Hope you’re having a wonderful morning! xx

Hi everyone ♥

Because I got such a response to the post about my shoe purchases from Harrods I decided to have a little go at trying to find some good bargains online as well for everyone who doesn’t have a Harrods sale nearby. I know more than anyone how frustrating it is to not have access to a big sale and I’d love to help someone score a great pair of designer shoes at a low cost.

You can find all the shoes here

I’m having massive cravings on several of these. I actually even had one of these pairs in my shopping bag but I can’t find my card!!! Normally they just store the credit card details (if you want) so it’s really easy to order quickly, but now that I have a new address my details got lost :/

I’m off searching through bags for my card, hope you’re having a lovely Tuesday evening! xx

EDIT: Found the card! New shoes on their way :D Can you guess which ones?

Good afternoon ♥

My flu has gotten worse since yesterday, but luckily I’m born with two of the same kind of sex chromosome so I’m not scared of dying when having a mild illness ;) Since we still don’t have any furniture in the living room I’ve camped up with a blow up mattress in the middle of the room and stocked up on green deliciousness. I’m planing on spending the whole day browsing the wonderful world wide web today! I’m feeling a little excited about it actually :)

What I like to do online when I have all the time in the world:

  • Online shopping. No additional words needed. You can check my favourite online stores here.
  • I recommend bloglovin to keep your favourite blogs organised and to find new treasures. You can find me here.
  • It’s always a good idea to stay updated on what’s going on in the world. I like to read Norwegian, Swedish and English newspapers.
  • Pinterest is for when you don’t want to lift more than a finger but still want massive amounts of inspiration and entertaining. You can find me here.
  • Facebook is a little dated now, isn’t it? I still like to check in once in a while though just to make sure I’m not missing out on something ;) You can find me here.
  • Online magazines, I use them mostly for reading up on new trends. Vogue and style.com are favourites.
  • Interior has become my new favourite thing. Right now I’m trying to put together some ideas to present to the interior designer, I will share all of this in a post once I’m done :)
